About Michelle Phillips

I write because I want to change the way the world views race.  With each piece, my aim is to eradicate negative stereotypes about African-Americans, while educating people about our culture.
Whether it's through contemporary poetry or educational material, I hope that what I share encourages people to embrace all cultures, and accept the differences that make up the diverse world that we live in today.

Committed to changing the way the world looks at race.

Nobody's Perfect

by K on 09/17/13

Nobody’s Perfect:

Admit screw-ups when you make them; pride will keep one from growth. Take ownership of your contributions without being so quick to judge and tell others about how you perceive them.  We often feel the need to comment on what someone else has said or done, sometimes going as far as to assume we know what others are thinking.  Well, unless you are capable of mental telepathy, your perceptions are just that… perceptions.  What we perceive as the right decision for ourselves doesn’t necessarily mean it would also be the right decision for others.  If we all focused on improving our own actions on a daily basis, situations that weren’t so perfect before, may start to turn in our favor.

Do you ever want to quit?

by K on 09/07/13

Do you think quitting only affects you?

It affects all those around you.

Do you believe in God? Who is your higher power? Buddha? The Universe? Whatever it is, you believe in something.  Be encouraged to hang on.  Life has its’ ups and downs; some have been through hell and back, and just when they are recovering, BAM!!! More heartbreaking news and disappointments.   Some blame God, some blame the universe; some think its karma, others think it’s just time and unforeseen occurrences that befall us all.  Whatever you think, as Pastor Matthew Barnett says, “Just give God twenty-four more hours and hang in there…”  He is the giver of dreams.  It may have been years since yours have come true.  You may even think that you are too old to dream or have YOUR dreams come true.  Do not be deceived; as long as you have breath, you are capable of dreaming and having yours fulfilled.  Let’s get going, let’s make our dreams come true; how?  One day at a time.  It can and will happen, but only YOU have control over that, of course, along with YOUR higher power.  Dream on.

It's the Little Things

It’s The Little Things…

We get a zit, pimple or dark spot, we hide in shame.

We lose a few hairs, we feel the same.

We break up with a significant other, we sometimes want to end it all.

We lose a job, we begin to think that we may end up living in our cars.

It’s the little things…

We gain 5lbs, oh no! 10lbs, we think we’re a fat ho!!

Don’t let us gain 15lbs, we think it’s the end, begin to take diet pills, go on a diet, will do just about anything to be thin.

It’s the little things…

We get in a argument with a loved one, damn them for making us mad!

We have a flat tire, Lord, now I will be late for my job!  You know I may get fired.

Our kids get on our nerves, our partners feel as if they are not being heard.

It’s the little things…

An Intern sues Diddy?

by K on 08/26/13

So Diddy’s former intern wants to sue him because she had to get his coffee and walk his dog a few times?…really??  Um, how about you grow the hell up.  Diddy was also an intern before he became uber successful, and I’m pretty sure he knew the in’s & out’s of brewing a good cup of Folgers.  If a person can’t follow orders—and for some reason or another feels some sort of entitlement, life is going to be pretty hard.  If a person is unwilling to be led, they will NEVER be a leader.

The Biebs

by K on 08/10/13

Why are so many people hatin’ on Justin Bieber?  Yes he’s young, yes he’s dumb… but aren’t most teenagers?  The difference is, his actions are caught on tape because the media won’t leave him alone.  Let the boy live… stop hatin’.  Could it be that many are just frustrated he’s earned boatloads of money, living a carefree life, having fun, AND is under 21?  Let the young man live; leave him alone.  Everyone seems to have something to say about Justin Bieber, so I guess what I’ll say to his is… Hey Biebs, keep getting paid and living life… you go boy!!!!

Another Trayvon?

by K on 07/27/13

Let's stand together and come against racism, murder & brutality.  Our Black boys mean just as much to us, and are just as important in the world as any other color.  Just as other nationalities will do for their sons, we will do for ours.  Our love is just the same.  We want them to be successful and law abiding citizens just the same.  We have aspirations and dreams for them just as ANY other COLOR.  Having black skin, or having any “black” in ones blood does NOT make them ANY LESS IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We all have the same desires in life, we just have different skin color.  Should that be an automatic death sentence?  Our culture is uniquely different, is the crime in that? We bleed and cry just the same as any other race.
